Introduction

Overview:

The Department of Urology at SGITO provides comprehensive urological care, addressing a wide range of conditions including urological trauma, infections, neurourology, and strictures of the urethra. The department works in close collaboration with other specialties, ensuring that all patients receive holistic and integrated care for their urological concerns.

The department is renowned for its expertise in urethral reconstruction and bladder management following spinal cord injuries. Experienced urologists are available full-time for consultations, providing exceptional care to both inpatients and outpatients.

Key Features:

  • Department Established: 2014
  • Specialization: Management of urethral injuries and neurogenic bladder
  • Intra-departmental Coordination: Close collaboration with the Departments of Orthopaedics, Pathology, Radiology, Medicine, and General Surgery.

About Urology:

Urology is a surgical specialty that focuses on the urinary tracts of both males and females, as well as the male reproductive system. Urologists are trained to diagnose, treat, and manage conditions related to these organs. The organs involved include the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra, and in males, the reproductive organs (testes, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate, and penis).

Since the urinary and reproductive systems are closely related, disorders of one can affect the other. Urology encompasses both medical issues (e.g., urinary tract infections and neurogenic bladder) and surgical problems (e.g., urethral stricture management).

Sub-specialties in Urology at SGITO:

  1. Neurourology: Focuses on the nervous system’s control of the genitourinary system, addressing conditions like urinary incontinence, detrusor overactivity, urinary retention, and detrusor sphincter dyssynergia caused by neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and spinal cord injury. Diagnostic tests like urodynamic studies and therapies such as clean intermittent self-catheterization, anticholinergic drugs, Botulinum toxin injections, and sacral neuromodulation are commonly used.

  2. Reconstructive Urology: Focuses on restoring the function of the genitourinary tract. Conditions like urethral or ureteral strictures often require reconstructive surgery to regain functionality.

  3. Andrology: Specializes in the male reproductive system, particularly male infertility, erectile dysfunction, and ejaculatory disorders. This field overlaps with endocrinology as male sexuality is primarily regulated by hormones. Surgical treatments include fertilization procedures, vasectomy reversals, and the implantation of penile prostheses.
