Skill Lab

Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedics has a state of art skill lab which caters the undergraduate, post graduate medical students, teaching and non-teaching medical faculty, nursing faculty, etc., Our institute has trained many teachers from many states like Gujarat, Tamil Nadu Andra Pradesh, Puduchery, and Karnataka Skill lab provides a safe and protected environment in which the learner can practise clinical skills before using them in real clinical settings.

Skill Lab is an innovative educational approach designed to enhance clinical skills and competency among medical graduates. This hands-on training facility simulates real-life medical scenarios, enabling students to practice and refine their skills in a safe and controlled environment.

Objectives

  1. Improve clinical skills: Develop proficiency in essential clinical procedures and techniques.
  2. Enhance patient safety: Foster a culture of safety and reduce medical errors.
  3. Boost confidence: Prepare students for real-world clinical settings.
  4. Meet accreditation standards: Comply with national and international medical education standards.
  5. Competency-based education: Measurable progress and assessment

Features

  1. Simulated patient cases: Realistic scenarios mimicking various medical conditions.
  2. Advanced simulation technology: High-fidelity mannequins and virtual reality tools.
  3. Interdisciplinary learning: Collaboration with healthcare professionals from various specialties.
  4. Debriefing sessions: Reflective discussions to analyse performance and identify areas for improvement.

Skill Lab Components

  1. Airway Management: Endotracheal intubation, bag-valve-mask ventilation with other airway manoeuvres.
  2. Cardiovascular Procedures: Correct technique of CPR, (Rate, Rhythm, Depth) Central line placement, peripheral IV insertion.
  3. Obstetrics and Gynaecology: Delivery simulations, prenatal care with Eclampsia management, perinatal care, PPH management.
  4. Paediatrics: Paediatrics resuscitation, paediatrics emergencies including neo natal resuscitation (NRP).
  5. Emergency Trauma Medicine: Trauma care, acute injury management (recognition resuscitation and safe transfer).
  1. Neuro emergencies stroke management.
  2. Poisoning, Stings and bites management.

Implementation Strategies

  1. Integration with curriculum: Incorporate Skill Lab into medical school curriculum.
  2. Faculty development: Train faculty members to facilitate simulation-based learning.
  3. Student engagement: Encourage active participation and feedback.
  4. Evaluation and assessment: Regular assessments to measure skill progression.

Conclusion

Skill Lab is an essential component of medical education, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. By incorporating simulation-based training, medical graduates become confident, competent, and compassionate healthcare professionals.
