Department of Microbiology
The Department of Microbiology caters to routine diagnostic microbiology, including bacterial culture, antibiotic sensitivity testing, fungal culture, and serological tests such as ASO, CRP, RA, Widal test, etc. For routine blood culture, the specialized blood culture system Bact/Alert is available. The identification of bacterial cultures is performed both manually and through the automated identification system (Vitek). The department also conducts ELISA tests for HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Anti-CCP, and other infectious diseases.
Additionally, the department provides services related to Hospital Infection Prevention and Control, including monitoring environmental samples in critical care areas of the hospital and checking the quality control of CSSD sterilization procedures.
The department has validated the reliability of tests through quality control programs (EQAS) and is committed to delivering quality services to cater to patient care.
Microbiology
Microbiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases. The Department of Microbiology at Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma & Orthopedics was established in 2014 and offers diagnostic services to both in-house and outside patients.
The department operates from 8 AM to 8 PM and provides various diagnostic services under clinical microbiology, including Immunology, Serology, Aerobic Bacteriology, Anaerobic Bacteriology, Antimicrobial Testing, Mycology, Parasitology, and Infection Control.
The Microbiology Laboratory is equipped with expertise, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and automation to independently carry out routine diagnostic work.

Assistant Professor and I/C HOD Microbiology
She has completed her MBBS from Sri Devraj Urs Medical College, Tamaka, Kolar, and a post-graduation MD in Microbiology from St. John’s Medical College and Hospital, Bangalore. She has worked as a consultant microbiologist for 9 months at hospitals in Bangalore and also as a lecturer for 2 years at St. John’s Medical College and Hospital.
She was responsible for setting up the microbiology laboratory at SGITO and has been working in the lab round the clock. She has completed 9 years of her tenure at SGITO as Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Microbiology. With 13 years of experience, she is a trained NABL internal auditor and has 10 publications to her credit.
She has a special interest in hospital infection control activities and academic work. She is actively involved in teaching paramedical students (BSc, OT, MLT, and BPT courses), nursing students, and nursing staff. Additionally, she takes care of infection control activities in the hospital.
