The department is led by Dr. Madan Ballal, a highly experienced orthopedic surgeon specializing in arthroscopy and sports medicine. Under his guidance, the department is committed to delivering excellence in patient care, research, and education.

The institute offers an academic fellowship program of 18 months with an intake of 4 feelows per academic year (affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Health Sciences) to post MS/DNB orthopedic surgeons.

The Government of Karnataka has recently recognised it as a centre of excellence for its contribution in the field of Arthroscopy and sports medicine.
MBBS, MS (Ortho), Fellowship in Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine
He is the Professor and HOD in the Department of Sports Injury and Arthroscopy at Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedics. He has 22 years of experience in the field of orthopaedics and specialized training in arthroscopy and sports medicine. He has 14 publications to his name.
He was the team doctor for Bangalore Football Club (BFC) from 2013–2019 and for the Indian Davis Cup team in 2014. He represented the state tennis team for 7 years, winning both state and national championships in singles and doubles. He won a bronze medal in tennis, both individual and team events, at the 3rd National Games 1994 in Pune, India. He was the captain of the Bangalore University tennis team, India.
He served as the Chairman of the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association Health Committee and as the President of the Bangalore Orthopaedic Society in 2020. He was a Senate Member of RGUHS from 2015–2018.

MBBS, MS (Orthopaedics)
He is an alumnus of J.N. Medical College, Belgaum, and has completed his Master’s in Orthopaedics from Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College, Kolar. He has 14 years of experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students. He is a member of ISKSAA, Indian Arthroscopy Society, Bangalore Orthopaedic Society, and Karnataka Orthopaedic Association.
He is trained in Arthroscopy under experts from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, and has completed multiple fellowships at the Shoulder and Sports Injury Unit, Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, Pune. He has also completed fellowships in Arthroscopy and Arthroplasty from IMRI, Adelaide, Australia, and a travelling fellowship in Delhi.
He has published 7 research articles in esteemed national and international journals. His special interests include sports medicine, shoulder arthroscopy, and the management of polytrauma cases.

He has 12 years of experience in the field of orthopaedics with specialized training in sports medicine, joint replacement, robotic surgery, and deformity correction. He has five international scientific publications to his name.
He was an on-field consultant for the All India Athletics Meet 2015 in Mangalore.
He has on-field experience as a treating doctor at various sporting events around Sydney, including Rugby, Cricket, Soccer, and Australian Football, between May 2017 and September 2018.
He has a special interest in joint-preservative and deformity correction surgeries, particularly in athletes of all ages, with an emphasis on returning to sports, whether professional or recreational.
