Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Introduction

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery:

Oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) specializes in treating many diseases, injuries, and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws, and the hard and soft tissues of the oral (mouth) and maxillofacial (jaws and face) region. It is an internationally recognized, unique surgical specialty. The breadth and scope of the specialty are vast and ever-expanding.

Maxillofacial Trauma:

Maxillofacial trauma refers to any injury to the face or skull. This includes injury to the facial soft tissues, bones, and teeth with supporting structures. It may range from a minor scar to lifetime disfigurement. Facial fractures and concomitant cranial injuries carry a significant potential for mortality and neurological morbidity, mainly in young adults.

The leading causes of these injuries include motor vehicle accidents, pedestrian collisions, falls, sports injuries, industrial accidents, assaults, and warfare injuries. These injuries can be life-threatening, as they may compromise the airway and cause significant hemorrhage. The management of facial trauma remains a challenge for oral and maxillofacial surgeons, demanding both skill and a high level of expertise.

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery has experienced staff who have been at the forefront in academic and professional fields with specialized training and research publications to their credit. It is headed by the Senior Surgeon and Head of the Department Dr Abhinandan Patel K. N, and the team follows Dr Girish G.
