Introduction

Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma & orthopaedics is a premier autonomous institute of govt. of Karnataka with 240 beds and state-of-the-art infrastructure having skilled & committed staff for care in trauma & orthopaedics. The institute is well supported by departments of orthopaedics, plastic surgery, neurosurgery, general surgery, urology, maxillofacial surgery, anesthesia, radiology, and lab services under one roof for comprehensive trauma care.

The hospital is the first and only autonomous institute of govt of Karnataka situated in the center of Bengaluru city and catering to the needy people from over three decades.

The department has four units, each with a professor, an associate professor, and assistant professors who are permanent staff. The department is also supported by senior residents on a contractual basis and postgraduate students.

Ten postgraduate MS (Ortho) seats are permitted by the Medical Council of India every year at our institute, where students undergo extensive training in orthopaedics with regular teaching programs conducted by the department. The department is well-supported by central and departmental libraries, which have most of the orthopaedic-related books, including recent editions and journals.

The Department of Orthopaedics also encourages academic activities by conducting CMEs and bringing out research works, which are published in national and international journals.

The Department of Orthopaedics is also involved in conducting free camps and performing free surgeries for the poor and needy under various government schemes. The successful completion of 100 free total knee replacement surgeries for poor people from June 2017 to December 2017 is one such example. Handling difficult situations most effectively and fruitfully is our domain, and we take pride in doing so.
