INTRODUCTION:

Sanjay Gandhi institute of trauma & orthopaedics is a premiere autonomous institute of Govt. of Karnataka with 240 beds and state of the art infrastructure having skilled & committed staff for care in trauma & orthopaedics. The institute is well supported by departments of Orthopaedics, Plastic surgery, Neurosurgery, General surgery, urology, maxillofacial surgery, Anaesthesia, radiology and Lab services under one roof for comprehensive trauma care.


The hospital is the first and only autonomous institute of Govt of Karnataka situated in the centre of Bengaluru city and catering to the needy people from over three decades.
The department of Orthopaedics is the main back bone of the institute with a team who have expertise in different sub specialities of Orthopaedics. The department is headed by Professor & HOD Dr Prakashappa who again expertise in complex trauma & joint replacement.


The department has four units with a Professor, an associate professor and assistant professors who are permanent staff.The department is also supported by senior residents who are on contractual basis and postgraduate students.


10 postgraduate MS (Ortho) seats are permitted by medical council of India every year at our institute who undergo extensive training in orthopaedics with regular teaching programmes conducted by the department. The department is well supported by central & departmental libraries which have most of the orthopaedic related books including recent editions and journals.
The department of orthopaedics also encourage academic activities by conducting CMEs and bringing out research works which are published in national & international journals.
The department of orthopaedics is being involved in conducting free camps and doing free surgeries for poor and needy people under various government schemes. The successful completion of 100 free total knee replacement surgeries for poor people during June 2017 to December 2017 is one such example.
Handling difficult situations most effectively and fruitfully is our domain and we are proud in doing so.


SERVICES AVAILABLE:


The department of orthopaedics renders following sub speciality services –

  1. Trauma (simple, Polytrauma & Complex fractures).
  2. Joint replacement (Hip & Knee Arthroplasty).
  3. Arthroscopy & sports medicine.
  4. Limb reconstruction
  5. Spine care.

The department is supported by 24/7 fully equipped casualty block to handle any kind of trauma.
The hospital has 5 operation theatres with state of the art equipments including fracture tables, two C –arm machines and all kinds of instruments to operate any orthopaedic procedures with well skilled nursing and other supporting staff. High quality implants including imported ones for joint replacement procedures are used.
Another 4 modular operation theatres dedicated exclusively for orthopaedic sub specialities will be opening shortly.
The outpatient block has following infrastructure with all modern amenities-

  1. 5 consultation rooms for orthopaedics
  2. One plaster room
  3. One dressing room
  4. Minor OT
  5. Demonstration room for post graduate students.

The institute has a seminar hall with multimedia projector & screen for postgraduate teaching. We also have an auditorium for conducting CME programmes.

Professor HOD Chief Unit - II


He has 17 years experience and 2 papers. His special interests are Joint re placements, pelvic fractures and arthroscopy. He is trained in arthroscopy and is specially focused on managing difficult non union cases, limb lengthening and deformity corrections.

Professor Unit - III


He has 14 years of experience. He has special training in Sports injuries and Arthroscopy. He has 7 publication. He was a faculty for the Indian Arthroscopy conference 2014, Faculty for Indo US shoulder conference 2011. He was Team doctor for Indian Davis Cup Team 2013-14 ans Team Doctor for Bangalore Football Club.

He has done a fellowship in Arthroplasty and AO basic and advanced courses. His special interests are in Arthroplasty and trauma. He has 9 years of experience and 2 publications.

He was ex- professor and HOD of Department of Orthopaedics, MVJ Medical College, Bangalore. He has 22 years experience in this field and interested in handling trauma cases and replacement surgeries.

Dr. Chidanand. K.J.C. MBBS, MS (Orthopaedics)
Assistant professor and Head of Unit 5


He is an alumni from J.N Medical college, Belgaum and has completed masters in orthopaedics from Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College, kolar. He has 12 years of experience in teaching undergraduate and post graduate students. He is a member of ISKSAA, India Arthroscopy Society, Bangalore Orthopaedic Society and Karnataka Orthopaedic Association. He is trained in Arthroscopy under experts from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. He is also a visiting fellow from shoulder and Sports injury unit, Deenanath Mangeskar Hospital, Pune. He has successfully completed a fellowship from ISKSAA, Delhi. He has published 4 research articles and 4 case reports in esteemed national and international journals. He has special interest in sports medicine, shoulder Arthroscopy and in managing trauma cases.

Assistant Professor


He has done MBBS at JJMMC, Davanagere. Post Graduation from Mysore Medical College. DNB Ortho from Sparsh Hospital, Bangalore. He has 10 years working experience in Orthopedics including 7 years of teaching experience.
He has 5 publications in Indexed journals and Fellowship in Arthroplasty and Arthoscopy. Has done AO Trauma course in basic principles of fracture treatment. His main areas of interest is arthroplasty & limb reconstruction apart from trauma.

He worked in various department of orthopaedic in complex trauma, Arthoplasty.
