INTRODUCTION:
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery:
Oral and maxillofacial surgery ( OMFS ) specializes in treating many diseases, injuries and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws, and the hard and soft tissues of the oral (mouth) and maxillofacial (jaws and face) region. It is an Internationally recognized, unique surgical speciality. The breadth and scope of the speciality are vast and ever-expanding.
Maxillofacial Trauma:
Maxillofacial trauma refers to any injury to the face or skull. This includes injury to the facial soft tissues, bones and teeth with supporting structures. It may range from a minor scar to lifetime disfigurement. Facial fractures and concomitant cranial injuries carry the significant potential for mortality and neurological morbidity mainly in young adults.
Leading cause of these injuries include motor vehicle accidents, pedestrian collisions, stumbling, sports injuries, industrial accidents, assaults, warfare injuries etc. These injuries can be life-threatening as these can compromise airway and can cause significant haemorrhage. The management of trauma involving the face remains a challenge for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, demanding both skill and high level of expertise. for oral and maxillofacial surgeons, demanding both skill and a high level of expertise.
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery has experienced staff who have been at the forefront in academic and professional fields with specialized training and research publications to their credit. It is headed by senior surgeon and Head of the Department Dr Abhinandan Patel K. N, and team follows Dr Girish G, Dr Rajendra K. S., and Dr Srinivas.

The department has the state-of-the-art medical facilities such as OTs, Surgical ICUs, 24-hour causality, inpatient beds and advanced diagnostic aids like MRI, CT etc. It has exclusive ward for Faciomaxillary procedures and well-trained nursing staff.
With a focus on personalised and customised care, the department follows international guidelines in hygiene and infection control. It believes in a holistic approach to health and is committed to clinical excellence. Along with the specialised treatment modalities being offered, the department is active in increasing awareness in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
We treat patients of all age groups and provide comprehensive surgical services through full range of outpatient and inpatient services. We collaborate with other specialities when needed.
The Department of maxillofacial surgery is also providing training in the field of maxillofacial trauma for the post graduate students posted in the department.
Fellowship Program:
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery offers a fellowship program in Trauma, affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), to the candidates who have completed their Post- Graduation in Maxillofacial Surgery. This unique program is of 18 months duration and provides a well-rounded and balanced training in handling the clinical inpatient and outpatient procedures and offers experience encompassing the full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Trauma. The program ensures that fellows develop a solid foundation in patient evaluation, treatment planning, and management.The structure of program is designed to facilitate an environment for scholarly activity and collaboration, including research and publication.
