INTRODUCTION:
Department of Microbiology caters for routine diagnostic microbiology including bacterial culture, antibiotic sensitivity, fungal culture and seriological tests such as ASO, CRP, RA, Widal test etc. For routine blood culture, specialised blood culture system Bact/Alert is available. The identification of bacterial cultures are done manually and through automated identification (Vitek) system. The department also performs ELISA tests for HIV, Hep B, Hep C, Anti CCP etc for various infections diseases.
The department also provides services related to Hospital Infection Prevention and control like monitoring environmental samples in critical care areas of the hospital and checking the quality control of CSSD sterilization procedures.
The department has validated the reliability of tests by quality control programmes ( EQAS) and aims at delivering quality services to cater to patient care.

ABOUT US:
Microbiology is a branch of medicine which deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infectious diseases.The Department of Microbiology at Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma & Orthopedics was started since 2014 and offers diagnostic services to both in house patients as well as outside patients.
The department runs from 8am to 8pm and caters to various diagnostic sections under clinical Microbiology like Immunology,Serology.Aerobic bacteriology,Anaerobic bacteriology,Anti microbial testing,Mycology,Parasitologyetc and Infection control.
Microbiology Laboratory has expertise,State of art infrastructure and automation to function independently to carry out regular diagnostic work.
Our Motto is to deliver quality Microbiology diagnostic services in a timely and accurate manner to aid in patient care.
PROCESS:
Microbiology laboratory is well equipped with Biosafety cabinet, automated blood culture and identification system, ELISA washer and reader, Nephelometric analyser etc. to perform culture and sensitivity testing, serological tests, staining methods, ELISA tests, Surveillance cultures etc. to deliver quality Microbiology services. The department has enrolled in external quality control programme conducted by CMC Vellore, which is done 4 times a year on quarterly basis to ensure the accuracy and good quality of reports. Internal quality control testing is done routinely in the lab on weekly and monthly basis.

She has completed her M.B.B.S., from Sri Devraj Urs Medical College, Tamaka, Kolar and post graduation M.D, Microbiology from St.Johns Medical College and Hospital, Bangalore. She has worked as Consultant microbiologist for 9 months at NU Hospitals, Bangalore and also as lecturer for 2 years at St. John’s Medical College and Hospital. She is responsible for setting up of Microbiology laboratory in SGITO and working of the lab round the clock. She has completed 9 years of her tenure in SGITO as Assistant professor and Head of the Department of Microbiology. She has 13 years of experience.
She is a trained NABL Internal Auditor and has 10 publications to her credit. She has special interest in hospital infection control activities and in Academic activities. She is actively involved in teaching paramedical students of BSc AT, OT, MIT, MLT Courses, BSc Nursing students , nursing staff and BPT Students, and takes care of infection control activities in the hospital.
