Sanjay Gandhi College of Nursingis working under theSanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopedic, affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka, recognized by the Indian Nursing Council and Karnataka Nursing Council with 60 seats. Sanjay Gandhi College of Nursing is established in the year of 2004-05 with the student strength of 38. SGITO serves as Parent Hospital to Sanjay Gandhi College of Nursing.
On the academic front the Institute serves as a Teaching Forum for Nursing students for Under Graduate programmes.
Several of our staff had been involved in continuing Nursing educational programmes.
The most essential need for any student and Researcher is a good library & information services and has established one such specialized library in the field of Nursing.

Basic B.Sc. Nursing
This programme of study guides to a Basic B.Sc.Nursing offered by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore. The students are provided with theoretical instruction integrated with clinical experience to develop an aptitude for nursing and to provide the necessary knowledge and skills to give comprehensive nursing care to patients in all types of illness with following objectives of study.
Aims and Objectives of Basic B.Sc Nursing:
- Prepare graduates to assume responsibilities as professional, component nurses and midwives in providing promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative services.
- Prepare nurses who can make independent decisions in nursing situations, protect the rights and facilitate individuals and groups in pursuit of health, function in the hospital, community nursing services, and conduct research studies in the areas of nursing practice. They are also expected to assume the role of teacher, supervisor and manager in a clinical/public health setting.
- To provide a balance of professional and general education to enable a student to become professional practitioner who has self-directing and responsibility of a citizen.
- Graduates of a programme are prepared for beginning level positions in community and institutional nursing services and have the foundation for continuing professional development for study in nursing.

Application for Admission:
Candidates are advised to go through the Institute Advertisement carefully before sending their applications to the Institute. Application for selection shall be made on the prescribed form and sent to the Principal,, Sanjay Gandhi College of Nursing , Byrasandra, Bangalore, The Prospectus with application form can be had by sending Bank draft for Rs.500/- drawn in favor of the Sanjay Gandhi College of Nursing , Byrasandra, Bangalore-560011 from any scheduled bank.
The application may be sent to the Principal, Sanjay Gandhi College of Nursing, Byrasandra, Bangalore-56011, in person / by registered post with acknowledgement due so as to reach in time. Application fees paid will not be refunded. Applications which are incomplete shall not be considered. The Institute will not take responsibility for any delay in the receipt or loss of application in postal transit.

Eligibility for Admission |
|
Candidates seeking admission should have:
- Passed the two years pre-university examination or equivalent as recognized by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore. Subjects, viz Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
- Obtained at least 45% (Forty Five percent) marks of the total marks in science subjects of the qualifying examination; if belonging to SC/ST/OBC Caste, should have obtained not less than 40% (Forty Percent) of the total marks in science subject of the qualifying examination.
- Completed 17 years of age at the time of admission or will complete this age on or / before 30th September of the year of admission.

Attendance, Progress & Conduct |
|
1. Each student must have certificate of satisfactory attendance, progress and conduct from the principal of the college of Nursing to be eligible for appearing in the university examination.
2. A minimum of 80% attendance required in theory and 100% practical’s /Clinical separately in each subject in each academic year is essential for appearing in the examination. A candidate pursuing in the course shall study in the college for the entire period as a full time student. No candidate is permitted to work in a hospital/nursing home/laboratory/college while studying this course. No candidate should join any other course of study or appear for any other examination conducted by this university or any other university in India or abroad during the period of registration. Each academic year shall be taken as a unit for calculating the attendance. |

Internal Assessment |
|
Regular periodic assessment shall be conducted throughout the course. The test preceding the university examination may be similar to the pattern of university examination. Average of the marks of the three tests for theory and practical separately shall be sent to the university.
A candidate shall secure not less than 50% of marks prescribed for internal assessment in theory and not less than 50% marks prescribed in practical, separately, in each subject/paper to be eligible to appear in the university examination. |

Schedule of Examination |
|
The university shall conduct two examinations annually at an interval of not less than 4 to 6 months as notified by the university from time to time. A candidate who satisfies the requirement of attendance, progress and conduct as stipulated by the university shall be eligible to appear for the university examination. Certificate to that effect shall be produced from the Head of the institution along with the application for examination and the prescribed fee. |

Voluntary Withdrawal from the Course |
|
Students who are voluntarily withdrawing from the course, the fees paid is not refundable. Indian nationals who have passed their qualifying examination conducted by the recognized Board / statutory Universities within or outside the state of Karnataka but within the country need eligibility certificates. Obtaining eligibility certificate from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences is mandatory at the time of admission. |

Fees |
|
The payment of all fees payable to the institution as prescribed by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore. Fees and other charges once paid shall not be refunded in any case including that of term not joining the institute for any reason and no correspondence will be entertained in this connection.
General Instruction:
- Applications received after the due date will not be considered.
- All particulars in the application form must be written carefully and legibly.
- The decision of the Selection committee of the Institute shall be final in the matter of selection of candidates for admission to the various courses and no appeal shall be entertained on the subject.
- Any attempt on the part to influence directly or indirectly will be a disqualification.
Conduct and Discipline
- Students are required to maintain ethical and professional standard and behavior.
- Student should make every effort to take care of the School / College, Hostel and Hospital property.
- Students are required to follow the Rules and Regulations laid by the Hospital, Hostel and School / College Authorities.

The Department of Fundamentals of Nursing is involved to give training and practice of undergraduate and diploma nursing students in the development of clinical bedside skills, comprehensive care.
The Department of Medical Surgical Nursing provides courses related to adult nursing as well as advanced nursing practice for undergraduate, post-graduate and diploma in nursing students. The department helps the students to develop knowledge, skills and clinical competence in health care settings. The Medical Surgical Nursing Department has conducted various activities as a part of curricular & co-curricular requirements in collaboration with Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopedic which has 200 bedded hospital.
The following are the programs that were conducted:
- Pain management – Nurse’s responsibilities.
- Nurses Day
- World Diabetes day – health education, marathon run, diet demonstration, foot care.
- World Aids day – walkathon, interactive sessions with the affected individuals, importance of pharmacological therapy & modifications of lifestyle.
- Organisation and exhibitions of all World Health Programmes.
- Cancer awareness programmes.
- Medication errors & management.
- Participation in screening & maintaining blood group type & type data base of all nursing students in collaboration with the Department Of Emergency Medicine.
Ongoing projects are:
- Conducting an orientation and induction programme for newly recruited staff nurses in the hospital.
- Conducting clinical teaching programme for staff nurses & students in the wards on selected procedures.
Proposed projects are:
- Conducting research projects in collaboration with the hospital.
- Co-ordinating with the hospital regarding the importance & documentation of pharmaco- vigilance in collaboration with the department of pharmacy, SanjayGandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopedic, Bangalore.
The department of Child Health Nursing provides courses related to child health nursing within the framework of Indian Nursing council (INC). The courses offer the students the opportunity to identify the needs of children and provide comprehensive care. The department is provides clinical and class room teaching for undergraduate in nursing students.
- Obstetrical and Gynecology Nursing
The Department of Obstetrical and Gynecological Nursing provides quality teaching and learning experience for student of under-graduate in nursing students. The department encourages the students to carry research in areas of reproductive and women’s health.
The OBG departmental objectives are to,
- Provide and maintain quality class room, clinical learning experience to students
- Encourage the UG students to actively participate outreach programmes
- Reinforce skill learning in nursing procedures related with obstetrics and gynecology
- Encourage Under graduate students to carryout research activity with adhering ethical principles.
The departmental faculties are well qualified, experienced and taking regular classes and carrying clinical supervision for the students of basic B.sc nursing,. The staff of department of OBG nursing are committed themselves to maintain, give standard education for the students. The staffs are also actively participating various educational programmes in the hospital and community on various topics related with maternal and child health Nursing. The OBG department observing Breast feeding week, world population day every year along with community health and child health nursing department.
Department of Psychiatric Nursing helps the students to develop in depth knowledge and skills to deal psychiatric problems and promote mental health for individual, family as well community.
PHILOSOPHY
The faculty, department of mental health (psychiatric) nursing believe that after completion of the prescribed course the students will be able to
- Demonstrate excellent clinical skills in the integration of neurobiologic, psychosocial and psychiatric nursing knowledge in delivery of care to individuals experiencing mental illnesses both in the hospital and community area
- Engage in active participation in research activities and in nursing education.
SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE DEPARTMENT
- Periodic workshops are organized for staff nurses, students and faculty.
- Department celebrates “World Mental Health Day” every year. During this occasion faculty and students visit old age homes, special schools and home for physically challenged. Role play, health education, poster presentation, seminars and recreation programmes are organized.
- Observation visit to mental health centres, rehabilitation centres and also home for physically challenged.
- Guidance and counselling are provided for student as and when needed
- Department regularly provides community mental health services like screening of mental illness, public awareness on mental health, counselling the vulnerable groups and health education through proper audio visual aids.
- Department organizes school mental health programmes regularly.
The Department of Community Health Nursing is involved training of under-graduate in nursing students in the field of Community Health Nursing.
Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopedic has adopted Jigini PHC under the Arogya Bandhu scheme as its rural centre. The students are posted in from October to June on rotation every year as per their requirements.
Activities of the Department
- In addition to meeting the requirements the students conduct many other programmes. We celebrate all national and international health days like population day, AIDS day, Diabetic Day etc by conducting seminars, rallys , health check ups etc
- Health education is provided through puppet shows, role plays etc.
- Physical assseement is done at the homes and at the health centres. Morbidity clinics, ANC, PNC, Immunization clinics etc are also conducted
- We conduct ‘School Health programme’ in different schools and educated the students regarding various health topics like personnel hygiene, menstrual hygiene, dental hygiene, balanced diet etc.
- We are invited by urban schools and other schools to conduct health education and also to educate the teachers about first aid, emergency etc.
Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopedic has been promoting research activities in nursing sciences since its inception in the form of undergraduate research projects oriented to different aspects in nursing specialty such as medical and surgical nursing, OBG nursing, psychiatric nursing, community health nursing and child health nursing in the field of community and the hospital. Many research studies have been conducted on important nursing issues, since many ongoing research studies are on process.
The departmental of nursing research objectives are to,
- Helps the student to understand basic research concepts and principles
- Build up research potentials in the departmental of nursing with sincerity adhering to ethical principles.
Encourage the students to apply a solid understanding of the research process & study findings to patient care and evaluation.

Department of nursing administration aim is to provide new efficient and effective managers and leaders in health care.
Objective of the department
The students will develop basic skills and able to function effectively as a nursing administrator in the hospital and community.
ACTIVITES OF THE DEPARTMENT
- As a part of INC and R.G.U.H.S curriculum requirement, the department is keen in organising workshop, seminar for the staff nurses and student nurses in co-ordination with BSc Nursing student and the nursing superintendent of Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopedic Hospital.
- Induction programme and orientation programme for the new staff nurses will be conducted at last week of every month by the department faculty.
- Organising two workshops, and two seminar per year on current problems and innovations for the staff nurses will be conducted in coordination of nursing superintendent of Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopedic hospital.
- Staff development programme and CNE programme will be conducted on every Friday of the month in order to update the knowledge of the student nurses and staff nurses in the field of nursing.
- Providing information about the objectives, working pattern and organizational function to the staff nurses and student nurses of various institution who are visiting us.
Today a, all nurses are managers, whether you work on a medical floor in an acute care hospital , in a critical care unit , an ambulatory care clinic in home care, you must deal with staff, including other health care personnel who work with you and for you, and you must use resources wisely.
