The department of neurosurgery is one of the major departments to support the trauma centre. This is a medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders which affect any portion of the nervous system including the brain, and spinal cord. In neurosurgery at SGITO, doctors provide the most current management and surgical techniques, including minimally invasive options to hundreds of patients.The department focuses towards both paediatric and adult neurological disorders.The department comprises of State of the art equipments like Neuromicroscope / micro surgical instruments, coagulation devices, advanced neuro-surgical drills & saw/ specialised neuro anaesthetic & neuro-surgical nursing team with physiotherapists & dietitians.

  • AWAKE BRAIN SURGERY : Also called an awake craniotomy, this involves sedation and localized anesthesia to block out any pain. During the procedure the doctor will place your head in a fixed position to keep it still and ensure accuracy. He will then remove part of your skull to reach your brain. The patient would be awake during most of the surgery, but sedated and asleep while parts of his skull are being removed in the beginning of the surgery and put back at the end of the surgery.
    • Deep brain stimulation (DBS): A surgical treatment involving the implantation of a medical device called a brain pacemaker, which sends electrical impulses to specific parts of the brain. DBS in select brain regions has provided therapeutic benefits for otherwise-treatment-resistant movement and affective disorders such as chronic pain, Parkinson’s disease, tremor, depression and dystonia.

Operative Microscopes

An operating microscope is an optical microscope specifically designed to be used in a surgical setting, typically to perform microsurgery. Design features of an operating microscope are: magnification typically in the range from 4x-40x, components that are easy to sterilize or disinfect in order to ensure cross-infection control. Equipped with a binocular head with adjustable eye pieces and foot controls to allow freedom of arm movement, it illuminates and magnifies the deeper parts of the operating field.

Intra operative electrophysiological monitoring

Intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring (IONM) or intraoperative neuromonitoring is the use of electrophysiological methods such as electroencephalography (EEG), electromyography (EMG), and evoked potentials to monitor the functional integrity of certain neural structures like nerves, the spinal cord and parts of the brain during surgery. The purpose of IONM is to reduce the risk to the patient of damage to the nervous system, and/or to provide functional guidance to the surgeon and anaesthesiologist. When the affected nerve is exposed during surgery, very sensitive electrical testing can be performed, which helps guide the surgeon.

One year Fellowship in Stereotaxy and Functional Neurosurgery under the aegis of Neurological Society of India(NSI) and gained expertise in Deep Brain Stimulation for Parkinson’s disease,Spasticity and Epilepsy surgeries.

Having overall experience 0f more than 10yrs in various fields of Neurosurgery including all brain and spine disorders in both adult and pediatrics.

With special interest in Spinal deformity and Minimal invasive spine surgery (MISS), sought training in national and international dedicated centres under the flagship of AO SPINE and in Germany.

Associated with the first ever Functional Neurosurgeries in India-Pedunculopontine Nucleus Stimulation (PPN) and Anterior Capsulotomy.
